CHARACTER
Character Name: Jean Grey
Character Age: Unclear, but about 21
Canon: X-Men: Apocalypse
Canon Point: Right after the battle with En Sabah Nur + reviving Charles
History: this and this
Personality:
"I know how everybody feels."
Jean is more than she seems on the outside. There are many layers to her personality, with so many nuances and subtleties that can be easily overlooked. She is an introvert both by design and necessity, preferring to keep to herself because of her telepathic and telekinetic powers, as well as the thing she senses that grows inside of her; a thing that could very well pose a potentially fatal threat to humanity. She knows, too, that she's dangerous even to other mutants -- being telepathic means that she knows what they think of her, for better or worse.
Jean has spent most of her life locking away her powers and putting limits on it in consideration of others, fearful of what she might unleash if she loses control. Even so, she's pretty much made peace with the fact that she's a 'freak' and being an outsider to a group of people who are all genetically predestined to be outsiders themselves. Even so, she does not bear them any ill will, and is not resentful of them, deciding to keep her distance because it's the best thing for all of them; she understands their fear even if it's lonely and isolating, her fear of hurting others greater than anything else.
That she knows other people's innermost thoughts and secrets, their triumphs and fears, and the fact that she's easily the most powerful mutant on campus doesn't make her arrogant, nor does she pluck those secrets to use to her advantage. Jean is a very emotional person and clearly feels for the people around her, and it's obvious that she's affected by their thoughts and feelings no matter how much she tries to shut them out. She acts as emotional support for people who are distraught and need to be comforted.
While she's young, uncertain at times, and is clearly someone who's still finding her way in the world, she's coping with what she's been given and unselfishly trying to make the best of it. In fact, Jean is hardly a passive individual -- because she is wholly affected by other people's thoughts and emotions, she uses her powers to do something about it: largely to help others however she can, to comfort a grieving Scott (after the death of his brother) and to help rescue her teammates.
Jean is sincere and good-hearted, thoughtful and unselfish, and she doesn't use her gifts to lord it over people, or to elbow her way to the front to acquire a leadership position. She prefers to hang back during missions, and only step in where she's needed. She's very smart and bookish but humble, with a wry sense of humor that is evident when she has a second conversation with Scott, where she tells him that he's not the only freak in the school. While she has a tendency to be stand-offish and defensive when it comes to being brushed off (as can be seen in first time she meets Scott at the school), Jean genuinely means no one any harm. She's driven, feisty, more than capable of taking care of herself, and definitely won't take crap from anyone. Of course, she's not without her rebellious streak; she's more than happy to tag along with the others to go to the mall, for one, even if they aren't allowed.
In the beginning of the movie, Jean is shown to fear her powers, and to loathe the fact that she's stuck in her own head, haunted by them and plagued by the thoughts and feelings of others. But at the end of the movie, she's grown and evolved, learning to control her considerable powers and not to fear it. This, of course, reveals another facet of her personality -- the fact that she would not hesitate to destroy anything that threatens and hurts her friends, as well as her immense capacity for compassion and empathy. It's easy to be cynical and detached when you see the ugliest side of humanity on a regular basis, but Jean chooses to be a protector, to see the best of people and sympathise.
It must also be said that while she is afraid of her powers getting out of control, she is no coward. She tends to put other people's needs above her own without question, bravely heading into enemy territory to rescue her teammates. Jean is definitely more intuitive than analytical; she's not so big on strategy and planning, and has a tendency to take the leap into the unknown for the sake of the other X-Men.
She is largely a kind and gentle soul, genuine and sincere and happy to be in the background, to follow and to be where she's needed, and to defend her teammates where necessary. Of course, this doesn't mean that she's a doormat; she's a quiet, steady presence, and she firmly takes the lead where necessary, revealing in herself a strength of will, a fighting spirit, and a grit that had flown under the radar until she was called upon to take on En Sabah Nur.
Jean Grey is strong-willed, tenacious and resilient, refusing to let her overwhelming power swallow her -- she constantly seeks to improve, eager to use her gifts to save people instead of oppressing them. In the trilogy, it's also very clear that Jean is a woman who will do anything to defend what she loves, even if it means sacrificing herself to ensure the safety of all that she holds dear.
Despite her constant struggle with her powers, Jean is independent and passionate about the causes she fights for, never allowing others to push her around. She's an idealist who strongly believes in Professor Xavier's philosophy of peaceful co-existence between mutants and humans, and is seeking protecting the ones who are weaker than them instead of exploiting them -- in time, as she grows older, she has all the potential to be one of the greatest believers of his teaching; she sees him as a father figure, learning what she can from him (even the little telepathy finger gestures). She sees Mystique as an inspiration, having been encouraged by what she'd seen of her at the stadium years ago. Even so, she remains someone who should not be fucked with, because under the quiet exterior is a strong woman with steel in her spine who is not afraid to be tough, and she's fully capable of killing even though she would prefer not to (see: En Sabah Nur) where necessary to protect who she loves.
Inventory: X-Men flight suit, that's pretty much it.
Abilities: Jean Grey is a Class 5 Mutant, pretty much currently the only one in existence in the entire X-Men movie universe. Here is a list of her powers:
- Telepathy. She's able to read minds, influence and manipulate them, as well as hear the thoughts of everyone in the vicinity. According to Charles, she's the most powerful telepathic mutant in existence, surpassing even him with her gifts. She can control minds, form mental connections and links with people, and to a certain extent can block their powers from manifesting. She can also send out telepathic blasts to hurt others, and shield her own mind from being intruded into. Jean can also track other people's minds, and restore memories to people who have lost them. Jean can also possess other people's minds and use that body like her own.
- Telekinesis. Jean's telekinesis is unparalleled -- she can do absolutely anything she can dream of, because she's able to control, manipulate, absorb, re-shape and destroy things on a sub-atomic level. See: the way she destroys Apocalypse. She can also fly, move, immobilize, manipulate objects and create shields and barriers. She can also use telekinetic energy blasts to deal devastating damage
- Host of the Phoenix. She can generate cosmic fire to pretty much burn the hell out of Apocalypse as well. She can also control life energy, as can be seen when she revives Charles after the fight. The Phoenix also boosts her telepathy and telekinetic powers to near-limitless levels.
- Prescient ability to sense the future
Flaws: Resting inside Jean Grey is the infinite potential for destruction: the Phoenix Force. At this point, there is still the chance that the Phoenix Force can be corrupted and evolve into a force of chaos and destruction and pretty much its own form of evil. Jean might have been able to control the Phoenix when she faced off against En Sabah Nur, but that kind of control is still a work in progress, as her emotional state can negatively impact her control over that kind of power. There's still a chance that she may turn out to be Dark Phoenix, which is probably why the Door chose her.
